The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Reliant Medical Group specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia. In the United States, over 35 million Americans suffer from chronic lung disease and lung cancer is responsible for one in seven deaths nationwide. At Reliant Medical Group, our physicians and nurses offer sophisticated care and treatment for all manner of lung ailments in addition to treating breathing conditions such as sleep apnea.
The latest advanced procedures for diagnosis and treatment
As well as diagnosing and treating lung and breathing problems, Reliant Medical Group pulmonologists also perform specialized procedures such as bronchoscopies, where a flexible fiber optic tube called a bronchoscope is used to look at air passages in the lungs and extract samples for analysis. Some of the other key procedures performed by Reliant Medical Group pulmonologists include blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests (PFT), closed pleural biopsy, open pleural biopsy, spirometry, polysomnogram (sleep studies), and percutaneous tracheostomy. Reliant Medical Group physicians are also performing new, highly advanced procedures such as argon plasma coagulation, a sophisticated technique that uses argon gas to remove tissue and medical pleuroscopy, a less-invasive technique used to view into the pleural space that can be performed under local anesthesia.
Special clinics and programs to assist patients
The Division of Pulmonology also sponsors a number of clinics and programs to help patients better manage their illnesses. The COPD Program offers fast access to doctors and nurses, a highly coordinated treatment plan, and a wealth of support and information for those suffering from COPD. The Sleep Apnea Clinic is designed to help all those suffering from sleep apnea and provides rapid diagnosis through our Sleep Lab as well as highly effective methods for curing this common condition. The Asthma Clinic offers streamlined treatment for asthma sufferers and provides essential education and follow-up care to help manage this disease.
A full range of services, including in-hospital and rehabilitation
Reliant Medical Group pulmonologists also perform vital critical care medicine for severely ill patients. Much of their time is spent treating patients in either Medical Intensive Care Units or Surgical Intensive Care Units at St. Vincent Hospital. Reliant Medical Group also runs a Pulmonary Care Unit to provide in-hospital care for patients who are more stable. Reliant Medical Group patients undergoing rehabilitation for pulmonary problems are referred to the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program held at Parkview Rehab and Fairlawn Hospital in Worcester. For added convenience, Reliant Medical Group pulmonologists are available to see patients at our sites in Leominster and Milford as well as at the Worcester Medical Center in downtown Worcester.
Unique, coordinated care for lung cancer patients
Reliant Medical Group physicians also participate in the Lung Cancer Center at St. Vincent Hospital. Patients who may have lung cancer or who have been newly diagnosed with lung cancer call a special phone number for consultation and then are directed to the appropriate physician for care. Each patient’s care is coordinated by a team of departments, including pulmonary, oncology, thoracic surgery and radiation oncology to offer the best possible outcome for their illness.
