Six Reliant Medical Group Doctors Honored for Contributions to Medicine

WORCESTER, Mass., January 17, 2013 – Reliant Medical Group is honored to announce that five of its physicians have just been recognized for their significant contributions to the medical community. Among those honored are Dr. Joel Popkin, a primary care physician; Dr. John Trudel, a family practice physician and Assistant Director of Informatics; Dr. Robert Harizi, a cardiologist; Dr. Renu Goyal, an internist and Chair of the Hospital Based Internist department; Dr. Joseph Hannan, a cardiologist; and Dr. Robert Yood, Reliant’s Division Chief of Rheumatology and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Popkin was recognized as the 2012 Laureate Award recipient, which is presented to one Massachusetts physician annually by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Physicians. According to the Mass. Chapter’s announcement, the award recognizes “members of the College who have demonstrated by their example and conduct an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research and in service of their community, their Chapter, and the American College of Physicians.”

Recognized for his achievements in healthcare information technology, Dr. Trudel was named one of the Top 25 Clinical Informaticists in 2012 by leading medical publication ModernHealthcare.com. Dr. Trudel was recognized for his development of “an extensive array of tools for [Reliant’s] EHR to improve clinical quality, reduce errors and boost usability.”

Dr. Harizi was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the Worcester Public Schools by the Worcester Educational Development Foundation. He was recognized for his success as a physician with Reliant and for his charitable work, including providing cardiac care for children from South America, as well as being a founding member of the New England Albania Relief Organization.

Dr. Goyal was awarded the Community Educator Award for 2011-2012 by the UMASS Medical School. The award is presented for sustained excellence in undergraduate medical education in the community setting.

Dr. Hannan received the Integrity award, which was presented by Vanguard Health Systems at their annual meeting in October. Dr. Hannan was presented his award for his commitment to advancing cardiac medicine and for demonstrating the highest levels of integrity in his interactions with patients and fellow medical professionals.

Dr. Yood has been awarded the 2012 Worcester District Medical Society Career Achievement Award.  The annual award honors a member of the Worcester District Medical Society who has demonstrated compassion and dedication to the medical needs of patients and/or the public and has made significant contributions to the practice of medicine.
